It has been a little while since Handy Women showed up in your inbox, so let us introduce ourselves.

Geraldine laid the foundation for this community and has now handed the toolbox to us, Jenn and Hailey. We are so excited to build a shop on this foundation, open the doors wide, and invite even more women to learn alongside us.

Our mission is still Empowering Women with Tools™, but when we say tools, we mean so much more than drills and hammers.

We mean knowledge. Skills. Resources. Confidence. Knowing how your home works, what you can handle yourself, when to call a professional, and what questions to ask when you do.

Rather than spend this whole email telling you what we have planned, we thought we would show you.

A simple to use kit for helping homeowners understand, label, and document their electrical circuits.

Have you ever touched a breaker, plug, outlet, or switch plate and noticed that it felt unusually warm?

That is something worth paying attention to.

A loose, damaged, or poor electrical connection creates resistance and possible high heat that can reach over 700°F. These poor connections are called high resistance connections, or HRCs and are often the cause of house fires.

You can use your senses to detect warning signs that something may not be right including:

⚡ A breaker, plug, outlet or switch plate that feels unusually warm
⚡ Brown, yellowed, melted, or discolored areas
⚡ Buzzing, sizzling, crackling, or popping sounds
⚡ A fishy, burning, or hot plastic smell
⚡ A plug falling back out of an outlet or feeling loose

If you notice any of these warning signs take them seriously, stop using the breaker, outlet or switch and consider having a qualified electrician inspect the affected area. Note: dimmer switches can feel warm to the touch due to there design.

Knowing what “not normal” looks like is a tool, too.

We move in, flip switches, turn on faucets, and plug things in without really understanding what is happening behind the walls.

We want to change that.

We are on a mission to help you understand what you’re looking at, what you can safely tackle yourself, when it’s time to call someone, and what questions to ask when you do.

The goal is not to DIY everything.

The goal is to stop feeling like your own home is a mystery.

Home Maintenance

If a pipe ever bursts or a supply line starts leaking, you do not want that emergency to be the first time you go looking for your main water shutoff.

So here’s your Handy Women project this weekend:

1. Find it.
Look for the point where the main water line enters your home. Depending on your house, the shutoff may be in a basement, crawlspace, garage, utility area, or near the water meter. Hint: An indicator can be where an outside spigot is located facing your meter.

2. Know what it looks like.
You may have a round wheel style valve or a lever style ball valve.

3. Show everyone else.
Take a picture and make sure everyone in your household knows where it is.

TIME: 10 minutes
SKILL: Beginner
COST: $0

If the valve looks corroded, is leaking, or will not move easily, do not force it. Have a plumber take a look.

Ten minutes now could save you a lot of panic later.
