If one outlet in your bathroom suddenly stops working, the problem may be a tripped GFCI outlet somewhere else in the room or on the same circuit. Not the outlet itself!
If an outlet in your bathroom, kitchen, garage, or another GFCI-protected area suddenly stops working, the outlet itself may not be the problem.
A GFCI receptacle can also protect additional outlets farther downstream on the same branch circuit. Note: Using a GFCI to properly turn an older 2 prong outlet into a 3 prong grounded one, will not protect downstream receptacles. Having more than one GFCI on a circuit may cause issues.
Before you assume a dead outlet needs to be replaced, look for any receptacle with TEST and RESET buttons that may be the culprit.
Press RESET once. If power returns, you may have found the issue.
If the GFCI will not reset, immediately trips again, feels warm, smells unusual, or looks damaged, stop there and have a qualified electrician inspect it.
Bonus maintenance tip: According to manufacturer’s instructions, GFCI devices should be tested monthly. Testing is the only way to ensure that the internal electronic components are still functioning properly. Those components are what makes the magic happen. They constantly measure the balance of current and if the electricity takes an alternative path, such as your body, and throws that balance off, CLICK goes the button! It cuts the power supply off way faster than a standard breaker could, saving lives.
Now that you know why it is important to test monthly, make sure to put it on your calendar along with checking your smoke detectors! They have electronics too that you also need to make sure are in working order.

The Secret to a Smoother Paint Finish That Lasts
My father always said your paint job is only as good as your prep job. If you do not provide a properly prepared surface you risk the bond between the new paint and the old paint failing. The coating will flake off, crack or lift. Dust, grease, old drips, and rough patches can show through fresh paint and make the finish look uneven.
A few extra minutes of prep can make the actual painting part much easier.
1. Clean the wall.
Use a damp cloth or appropriate mild cleaner to remove dust and grime.
2. Let it completely dry.
Painting over a damp surface can create problems later.
3. Fill and sand imperfections.
Those little dents become much more noticeable once fresh paint hits the wall.
4. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
Don't leave all that fine dust sitting underneath your beautiful new paint.
A few extra minutes of prep can make the actual painting part much easier.

Give Your Dryer a 10-Minute Safety Check
HOME MAINTENANCE
Lint does not only collect on the filter. It can also build up behind the dryer and in the venting system. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fire departments in the US respond annually to roughly 3,731 clothes dryer fires caused by a “failure to clean.”
1. Clean the lint filter. Make this a before-or-after-every-load habit.
2. Look behind the dryer. Check for lint buildup (you should not see any) and make sure the exhaust duct is securely attached, not crushed, kinked, damaged, and is the proper material. Rigid or semi-rigid metal is the best. Plastic, vinyl, and cheap foil accordion hoses should never be used.
3. Check the outside vent. When the dryer is running, the exterior flap should open so air can escape. If there is a screen covering the vent opening, make sure it is clean and not obstructed.
If the dryer is taking much longer than normal to dry clothes, the venting is damaged, or you cannot safely access the duct, have it cleaned or serviced professionally.
